Owners who love spending time outdoors always look for ways to enhance their space and add that wow factor that’s guaranteed to be a conversation piece when entertaining guests.

Upgrading your vicinity enhances its beauty and creates a visual appeal while showcasing your personality.

If you’re looking for ideas to enhance your outdoor space, a pergola is an excellent addition to your landscape. It extends your living space and offers you protection during summer against the sun.

For plant lovers, a pergola is a perfect place for vines and climbing plants to thrive.

You can choose from three types of pergolas, including freestanding, retractable, attached, and eyebrow.

Once you’ve gone through this guide, call professionals such as Palmiye pergolas and other similar services to do the installation.

  • 5 Bottom Line

1. Go for a Style That Fits You

Pergolas have different parts to it, including stringers, supporting columns, ledger boards, beams, and rafters that influence the design of the outcome.

For instance, ‘L’ shaped columns give pergolas a modern edge, while a simple square column will complement a sleek design.

In your case, base your pergola style to complement your existing yard space to ensure that you get a concrete look. Match your style to a pergola design as it will set a tone for your outdoor space.

For instance, you can opt for a traditional style that includes an evenly spaced roof with scrolled pattern ends on the rafters and beams. Either round or square columns with simple finishes offer it support.

But to achieve a more modern look, opt for a pergola with flat or angle-ended beams and rafters that forms a concrete look when paired with clean and simple lines in a box frame design. And for that extra modern element, you can choose a customized roof design.

You can also achieve a contemporary feel by getting transitional pergolas with different design options, including archtops or curves with streamlined square columns.

2. Remember That Size and Shape Matters

The total area of your outdoor space will significantly influence the shape and size of your pergola.

And with pergolas ranging between octagonal, hexagonal, square, rectangle, and many more shapes, you may need a consultant who will measure the size of your space before settling on a style.

You’ll begin by choosing your placement for the pergola, including decks, patios, or even backyards.

For instance, if you have a large terrace where you often entertain guests, go for a larger pergola that fits in seamlessly with your deck.

But if you don’t have a deck, you can place your pergola in your backyard based and consider the maximum number of people you hope to get.

Meaning that if you’re anticipating no more than six people, a 12 by 16 sized pergola will be a perfect fit.

A modest 12 by 12 will be practical and valuable while flowing into the backyard for a small patio.

And after considering the placement, visualize the potential dimensions of where your pergola will be.

With everything laid down, you’ll need to pick a height you like between the standard eight feet or nine feet based on your preference and appropriate furniture sizes that fit both large or small spaces.

3. Choose Roofs Based On The Level Of Privacy You Want

When choosing pergola roofs, you will have a wide range of customizable options from where to get them.

You can settle on traditional designs with evenly spaced stringers that let the light filter through and create a shade simultaneously.

But for a flexible option, pick louvers that range from stationary, motorized, and manually operated. These adjustable louvers offer the flexibility of letting in sunlight at the desired times of the day or in different seasons.

And if you want a pergola that’s useable all year long, go for a fixed shade canopy that allows light while blocking the snow, rain, and UV rays.

You can achieve customizable features by getting retractable roofs that can block the rain or sun with a touch of a button.

Weather elements such as the sun, wind, rain, and snow can make a pergola less comfortable, producing shade on different sides.

Screens can also be installed perfectly and come in various colors and fabric densities to offer sufficient privacy.

If you love patterns that create a significant visual effect, settle for architectural screen panels that fit the aesthetic.

And for every plant lover, enjoying some privacy and shade can be achieved by adding a trellis that lets vines and other plants climb on it.

For a luxurious look, add curtains around the perimeter that’ll create shade against weather elements and offer privacy.

4. Pick an Appropriate Material

In the beginning, the construction of pergolas was done using wood or stone. But over the years, different materials, including steel, aluminum, fiberglass, cellular PVC, and vinyl, have risen in popularity.

If you choose to stick to wood, you can have a stained or colored effect that complements your intended style. However, wood is high maintenance, and you’ll need to seal it against elements to avoid getting a splinter which drives up the cost.

If you want a low-maintenance option, then aluminum will be fitting. It comes in many colors and can withstand different elements over a long period. Alternatively, you can settle on steel that offers strength, durability, and versatility.

And to achieve a roof that can span wide, settle for fiberglass that’s very strong and is deficient in maintenance.

However, if you still want that wood effect, pay for cellular PVC that resists moisture, provides strength, holds color well, and is 100% termite-proof.

Working with a small budget shouldn’t stop you from getting a pergola for your space as you can use vinyl which is low maintenance, durable, and can withstand elements.

Bottom Line

In conclusion, find a professional who will help set up the correct measurements and take you through the different types of pergola available. When your pergola is all set up, pick out weather-resistant furniture that matches your theme.

Then incorporate other elements that will range from throw pillows, an outdoor cooking area, potted plants, lighting options, and many more.

Ensure that your pergola shows your personality and is comfortable enough for you and your guests.
